PROGRAM & EVENTS - Hawaii Schools Digital Media (HSDM)

HAIS, in conjunction with ‘Olelo and the Hawaii Educational Networking consortium, awards grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 to Hawaii’s emerging K-12 video producers. This grant allows public and private schools statewide to develop or expand digital media video programs and create original school-based videos which are aired on channel 56.

HSDM Background
The Hawaii Schools Digital Media (HSDM) was established to develop and expand the capacity of public and private elementary and secondary school students to master the use of digital media technology in completing school assignments and projects, and to ensure that student projects are cablecast on public, education and government (PEG) access channels.

Students in public and private schools are using digital media technology to complete school assignments and projects in many ways. Some of the projects are assignments for classes that are specifically intended to teach the use of digital media technology. For other projects, students are using digital media technology to complete assignments in English, social studies, math, science, foreign language, and other courses. Many of these projects require hours of student effort, and deserve to be seen by a broader audience via cable TV.

Hawaii Schools Digital Media has the following goals:

  • To establish programs and processes to ensure that digital media content created by students in public and private schools in Hawaii will be cablecast on PEG access channels.
  • To develop identity, awareness, and brand for Hawaii schools digital media content
  • To provide student and teacher access to the tools and knowledge to use digital media to create, educate, communicate and inspire
  • To develop programs that encourage student use and mastery of digital media, and programs that recognize outstanding work including awards programs, critiques, and other recognition.

HSDM Individual School Grants
Private and public schools are invited to submit proposals to develop projects that will result in student digital media content to be cablecast on PEG access channels. Proposals include commitments to develop student video projects.

HSDM competitive grants are available to all Hawaii public and private K-12 schools interested in the development or expansion of a digital media video program for their schools. Grantees are expected to submit mid-year (January 15) and end-of-year (May 30) electronic progress reports.

A grant award requires that the project produce original school-based video programming during the current school year. Student produced videos may include such things as documentaries, news stories, public service announcements, music videos, animation and drama/short stories. Programming requirements do NOT ask for production of a single program (i.e. not a ˝ hour May Day Program), but rather for multiple segments that total the funding requirements. While more than one application may be submitted by a school, collaboration is encouraged as $2,500 is the maximum award to any one school.

The use of grant awards is at the applicant’s discretion. Some possibilities include training, attending local or mainland conferences, or purchasing equipment, supplies and software. The only expectation is that the agreed upon length of programming be met.
